There is one section on your MIDI keyboard that you might not be using often enough. The modulation wheel can be a great source for triggering various parameters of your software synthesiser.
Assign it to the filter's cutoff or the release of the volume amp. The possibilities are endless. You can also record the automation using mod wheel and give your tracks the extra live feel.
