A great way to tighten up the low midrange without losing too much warmth is to use a dynamic eq. First, find the muddy/boxy frequency in the low mids. Next, set the attack to medium and lower the threshold. The medium attack allows for the initial transient to come through, while the tail of the frequency is dipped in volume.
