Gating the sound can make it tighter and appear more percussive. However, applying this to the entire signal does not always bring the best results. To overcome this, try using a multiband gate.
This allows you to set a specific frequency range and process it without affecting the rest of the signal. E.g. You might want to tighten up the ringing fundamental frequency of the snare drum whilst keeping the natural reverb of higher frequencies intact.
